Mechanical Survival

About this blog

Mechanical Survival is the name of my grandfather’s book. The book was published in 1973, after he had died young and before I was born.

He was a mechanical engineer for Rolls-Royce, so the book is full of advanced mathematics related to the fatigue and resistance properties of various materials. I’ve never been able to read it. But it’s all I’ve got of him.

As for me, I never considered myself to be a mathematician, or even really a scientist of any sort. And yet since the late 2000s I’ve been pursuing a career in software engineering. Lately I’ve been wondering whether, if he and I were to have met, we’d have found we had something in common.

I’m going to write here mostly about software and management. But I’m also planning on reading Mechanical Survival this year. If I do, I’ll write about that too.
